Youth Empowerment For Engaged Citizenship - Habib University
The third Orientation Session of the project “Youth Empowerment for Engaged Citizenship” was held at Habib University on April 12, 2025. Organized by Shehri – Citizens for a Better Environment, the session engaged a dynamic group of students in critical conversations around civic identity, democratic values, and youth-led policy engagement.
The session opened with an interactive presentation on the project’s mission to create a replicable model of civic education within academic institutions. Students were introduced to fundamental concepts of citizen-state relations, governance mechanisms, and the policy-making ecosystem, with specific references to challenges and opportunities within Sindh and Karachi.
Students enthusiastically contributed to discussions about their perceptions of democracy, accountability, and their role in shaping public outcomes. Facilitators encouraged them to analyze the concept of the social contract, highlighting the importance of mutual responsibilities between the state and its citizens. The session also explored real-world policy scenarios, prompting students to think practically about civic intervention and reform.
This session successfully strengthened students’ awareness of their role as engaged citizens and reinforced the need for educational platforms that cultivate civic leadership and participation. It also contributed to the broader aim of establishing a sustainable academic model that supports informed, socially-conscious, and proactive youth.
