Youth Empowerment For Engaged Citizenship - University of Karachi
On October 16, 2025, Citizens for a Better Environment (Shehri-CBE) organized an exposure visit for students from the University of Karachi’s Department of Public Administration to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Head Office. This initiative was part of the “Youth Empowerment for Engaged Citizenship” project, which aimed to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world governance.
Event Overview
Participants: Approximately 30 to 40 students from the Department of Public Administration attended the session.
Objective: The visit was designed to provide first-hand experience of how public institutions function, how decisions are made, and how municipal services are delivered.
Host Organization: Shehri-CBE, a non-governmental organization established in 1988, facilitated the event to promote civic awareness and informed activism.
Itinerary and Key Activities
The visit followed a structured four-hour schedule (10:00 am to 2:00 pm) focused on the administrative and historical functions of Karachi’s municipal authority.
Introductory Sessions: Students gathered at the University before departing for the KMC Head Office. Upon arrival, they received an introduction at the City Institute of Image Management (CIIM) and a briefing on the history and functions of the Local Government system.
Institutional Tours: The group toured the City Council Hall, the Archive/Land Department, and the Complaint Center 1339, allowing them to observe the machinery of urban infrastructure and public accountability.
Leadership Engagement: A highlight of the visit included a scheduled meeting with the Mayor or Deputy Mayor of Karachi, providing students with direct access to elected officials.
Conclusion: The program concluded with group photos and refreshments provided by Shehri-CBE before the students returned to the University.
Educational Impact
The visit served to enhance the students’ understanding of the social contract and the various tiers of governance. By engaging with civil servants and representatives, the youth gained practical insights into the challenges of managing Karachi’s urban development and public services.
