On 31 August 2026, Shehri – Citizens for a Better Environment (Shehri-CBE) organized an educational exposure visit to Sukkur Municipal Corporation (SMC), Sukkur, for students from Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur. The visit was conducted under Component 3: Youth for Democracy – Civic Education and National Governance Engagement, as part of the broader Youth Empowerment for Engaged Citizenship initiative.
The exposure visit was designed to provide students with practical learning opportunities beyond the classroom and help them understand how local government institutions function, how public services are delivered, and how elected representatives and government officials contribute to local administration. The activity also supported the project’s objective of building young people’s capacity for informed civic activism through the practical application of civic education.
During the visit, students were introduced to the mandate, functions, and responsibilities of Sukkur Municipal Corporation and gained a better understanding of its role in local administration and public service delivery. The programme provided students with an opportunity to learn directly from municipal representatives and officials about the practical realities of local governance.
The programme included an introduction to the participants and the purpose of the visit by Sarwar Khalid of Shehri-CBE, Prof. Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, and Prof. Dr. Mujeeb Rehman, Head of the Department of Media and Studies at Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur. This was followed by an introduction and brief history of Sukkur Municipal Corporation delivered by Dr. Arshad Mughal, Deputy Mayor of Sukkur.
A key session focused on youth involvement in local governance, led by Ms. Azra Jamal, Member of Sukkur Municipal Corporation. The session provided students with an opportunity to consider the role young people can play in civic and governance processes and encouraged them to engage more actively with local institutions and decision-making.
The visit also included a question-and-answer session, allowing students to raise questions and gain further insight into the functioning of local government. Participants subsequently met Khalid Hussain Jatoi, Municipal Commissioner, Sukkur Municipal Corporation, and interacted with elected representatives and government officials. These engagements enabled students to learn from the practical experiences of individuals directly involved in municipal administration.

As part of the experiential learning activity, students also visited different departments of Sukkur Municipal Corporation and the Assembly/Council Hall. These visits helped connect their academic understanding of governance structures with the physical spaces and institutional processes through which local government operates.
The exposure visit provided students with a meaningful opportunity to connect their academic learning with real-world governance, decision-making, public service delivery, and citizen engagement. It encouraged participants to ask questions, understand the responsibilities of local government, and develop a stronger sense of civic responsibility and democratic participation.
Through this experiential learning initiative, Shehri-CBE continued its efforts to empower young people with practical knowledge of civic education, local governance, democratic processes, and informed civic activism. The visit demonstrated the value of direct engagement with public institutions in helping students better understand governance and their potential role as active and responsible citizens.
